I'm still here! I'm now married, and quite happily so. The wife, of course, is <a href="http://whoslurped.livejournal.com/"whoslurped</a>. Feel free to check out her site, though we've been married for almost 5 months at this point, and her most recent post is with 50-odd days till the wedding. :-)

I'll post later, I'm sure. "When" is an interesting question, though. :-D

    w00t! New job!
Okay, so it's not a cooking job, but it *is* full time with benefits! :-D

It's Radioshack. Yeah, I know. Shut up, you. :-D

I've always been a good salesman, and this position is 40 hours a week with medical, dental and vision. If I work my butt off (Eowyn's comment: "NO! I like your butt!"), I should easily be able to beat what I was making at my previous job.

I'm just *SO* happy that I've got a job that I can do well, and that will allow me to support my wife after we get married in May. Yay!

On the food side of things: I've got a lady checking with her church about doing some kind of dinner there -- I've not heard anything as of yet, but I'll keep communicating with her and see if we can get something set up.

And that's about all I've got time for -- I've got to get ready to go see my new boss and talk about scheduling with him.

    Wow! An update!
I am nerdier than 76% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

Okay, so anyway... I'm sitting here trying to do something to keep from going out of my mind. I'm tired, I'm annoyed with the fact that I've been sitting at the office doing crap for the last 5 hours (not counting lunch with Eowyn, of course), and I'm sitting here counting the days until a better tech support job comes along. ...or better yet: A cooking job!

Have I mentioned that I want to become a chef? Well, I guess I haven't mentioned it here, since it's been that long since I've posted. Yes, I want to be a chef when I grow up. As I'm only 3 weeks and a day from my 29th birthday, I'd better get cracking, eh?

Seriously: I've done some cooking for a couple of Red Cross (a la Katrina) benefits, and I've done some cooking for multiple people at SCA events... I've really enjoyed it, and would love to do more cooking. So I'm looking for information on how to get into the cooking world. My current plans are these: Get Eowyn out of school sometime in the next year-and-a-half to three years, then go to whatever culinary arts school is closest to me to earn a cooking degree. If we're still in the Knoxville area, I'll go to Walter's State. If we're not still here, well, I guess I'll have to go searching. :-)

Anyway... It's time for me to leave the office (FINALLY!!!), so I'm going to sign off for now. Hopefully it won't require another day of total and utter boredom to make me post again.

    This quote is teh funny!
We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true.

Tired... Worried about New Orleans folks...
So there's a Cat 5 Hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the Louisiana coast. According to what I'm reading, there could be no contact with civilians in southern LA for at least two weeks after this storm comes through.

    Prayers said, candles lit.

    All you Louisianans, stay safe.

Okay, so on the west side of Knoxville (near the West Town Mall area, for those familiar) is a 3 mile long interstate construction zone. The speed limit through the area is 45mph. The speed limit on the rest of the interstate through Knoxville is 55mph. No one drives anywhere near that, of course. I drive 65 in the 55 zones and 55 in the 45 zones, and I'm the slow driver.

Driving into work this morning, I got to the construction zone and slowed to 55. Most vehicles ran right up on my bumper then passed either to left or right (three-lanes each direction). This one particular semi, however, couldn't move over. He was no more than 6 feet (approx 2 meters) off my back bumper. I tapped my brakes quickly three times, just enough to make my brakelights come on and slow me down about 3 miles per hour. Man, this guy laid on his horn the rest of the time he was behind me (about 1/2 mile). At his first opportunity, he jumped out to my right to pass me. He wasn't halfway past me before he started pulling back over into my lane. Then when he was fully in front of me, he slammed on his brakes. I zipped past him on the right, cursing and yelling at him (both our windows were open). Then he followed me for the next mile or so, obviously trying to hit me. I was out of the construction zone at this point, doing about 75 mph, and doing my damnedest to avoid being crushed when I passed the cop. In the brief moment that I passed him, he looked at me, then looked at the truck behind me. And he did nothing.

I exited I-40 onto I-640, and the truck kept following, though he had to slow down for the off-ramp. I managed to lose him in traffic.

So here I am at work, still shaking. :-(

I still hate SMS... But this time, at least, it wasn't SMS's fault.
Install SMS on Server2. Works great. Need to install MAS 90 (accounting package) on same server. Do so. CRASH! BOOM! BANG!

Reload server from scratch, knowing that we should not mix SMS and MAS 90 on the same machine.

Install Mas 90 on freshly installed Server2. Create groups on Server1 (PDC) to control access to MAS 90. Try to add the group to the folder permissions for MAS 90 in the Program Files folder. The group doesn't exist in the list. Sigh. Go back to Server1. Observe the group's existence. Go back to Server2. No joy. Sigh. Go back to Server1. Delete the group. Recreate it. Go back to Server2. Oh, there it is.

Log on as a MAS 90 group member. Try to access MAS 90. Get an access error. Curse. Log off. Log back on as admin. Verify permissions. Log off. Log back on as MAS 90 user. Try to access MAS 90. Get an access error. Curse. Log off. Log back on as admin. Check logs on Server1. See the multiple and constant AD errors on Server1. Weep.

Pull out the Dell OpenManage CD. Reload from scratch. Eat Smarties for consolation while reloading.

Lesson 1: Once SMS is on a server, it should stay there (Otherwise, there are multiple Active Directory problems that arise when the Domain Controller can't find the SMS database)

Lesson 2: Fixing the problems takes longer than reloading from scratch

Lesson 3: Ghost your server when you're at a happy point with it (read: after installation and updates, but before any additional programs are installed)

Lesson 4: Buy stock in Smarties

    A moment of excitement
I picked up Arwen this afternoon, as is normal. We turned out of the college campus, as is normal. We turned off of the Strip, as is normal. We turned into the alley, as is normal. We made a left onto 14th, as is normal.

Pulling up toward the stop sign at 14th and Clinch, things went completely abnormal. A guy was sort of "skip-walking" (i.e. he wasn't really skipping, but he wasn't really running, either) while looking behind him. A police car pulled up right next to him, and the cop jumped out of the car. They talked for about 10 seconds, and the cop grabbed the guy and threw him down on the hood of the car.

As the guy was being cuffed, a second cop ran up Clinch to help the first cop. As we waited patiently for the cops to clear the road, we got to see them frisking the guy and search his pockets. The cop pulled a large medicine bottle out of the guy's pants. I'd be curious to know what's in the medicine bottle, and why it was of such interest to the cops. I'd also be curious to know why I saw so many firetrucks out this evening. Maybe this arrest has something to do with them firetrucks being out...?

So that was our interesting bit of ... stuff for the night.

After that bit of stuff, Arwen and I finished our drive to the apartment and watched television. We lead a boring life, eh? :-)

I believe I'm mentioned in the past that I hate SMS...?
Well, I still do, but it's not such a huge thing anymore. It actually seems to be working.

    Granted, I had to:
    1. Reformat the domain controller
    2. Reload the domain controller
    3. Recreate the test.mycompany.com domain
    4. Reformat the SMS server
    5. Reload the SMS servr
    6. Install all prereqs for SMS on both the domain controller and the SMS server
    7. Install SMS on the SMS server
    8. Manually extend the Active Directory schema on the domain controller

Nothing too big, really... Just 5 days of solid work after I figured out that the active directory was hosed... [sigh]

And now I'm off to see what sort of other work I can do while I wait for the system to find all the desktops in the test domain and install the SMS client to them.

And see Arwen's post to see how we're doing on the wedding planning. :-)

Episode III (Divided into generalities, then SPOILERS)
I just watched Episode III this evening with Arwen. The way I described it to her on the way out of the theater was: "Well, at least it answered the questions and filled most of the holes that were left after Episodes I and II..."

    Okay, generalities:
ACTING - It was bad, but not bad enough to make me want to leave the theater... Actually, it was about what I expected. Natalie Portman was given crap lines, as was Hayden Christensen. Ewan McGregor came out with an outstanding performance during the betrayal scene, as did Hayden Christensen. There were many significant "looks" in the movie, too, where the characters looked at each other to express emotions that words could not.
    *** out of 5

PLOT - It was about what everyone expected. It gave us the answers to how Anakin became Darth Vader, how (and why!) Yoda and Obi-Wan went into hiding, how the twins were delivered to their respective foster-parents, and what happened to all the other Jedi.
    **** out of 5

    SPOILERS BELOW...

    SPOILERS A BIT FURTHER BELOW...

    AND JUST A TOUCH FURTHER...

    HERE THERE BE SPOILERS:
Only a few major spoilers, actually -- The scene where the Younglings come to Anakin and ask him where they should hide... Omigod...
    **** out of 5

Padme dying due to Anakin's betrayal... Wowsers... He foresaw her death, then did everything to try and prevent it, up to and including going over to the Dark Side, and she died because of what he did.
    ***** out of 5

The fight scene between Anakin and Obi-Wan... Wowsers again... There was so much passion in that scene. If the acting allowed in that scene had been allowed in the other scenes, the movie would have been MUCH better. When Anakin Force-jumped over Obi-Wan's head and got his legs cut off, and Obi-Wan allowed him to slide close enough to the lava to be lit on fire, then left him... ...no words to describe my emotions after that scene...
    ***** out of 5

And at the end, when the Emperor told Darth Vader, (paraphrased) "Your actions killed her." That was truly the final step he needed to make Anakin's journy to the Dark Side complete. It was beautifully done -- bravo, George.

    Washington Vacation Details
(05/09)Arwen and I actually started our trip on the 9th with a trip to Nashville to spend the evening at Ted and Coco's house. We got out there, talked for a bit and then crashed into bed.

    (05/10)
We got up at the UNGODLY early hour of 4:30, and set off to the airport with Ted at 5:00. We took off at about 6:30, and flew uneventfully to the SEATAC airport in Seattle, Washington. My sister and brother-in-law were waiting for us at the airport, and they took us back to their home. Arwen, Gary and Rebecca hit it off immediately, which was good. :-) They began picking on me in tandem, which, while expected, wasn't good. :-D We had lunch, and Gary left for work. Rebecca, Arwen and I spent much of the rest of that day talking and having fun. Members of the singing group of which Rebecca is a part ("Breaking Free" is the name) came over that evening for rehearsal and fellowship. Much fun was had, and much (home-made, fresh) buffalo roast was consumed. Gary came home later that evening, and the fun continued until around bedtime, at which point Arwen and I crashed HARD. We were rather exhausted, as I'm sure can be excused by the length of our day.

(05/11) We woke up at a much more decent hour of 7:15AM, which, to us, anyway, was much more like 10:15. It was pleasant. :-D We had (fresh, home-made) pancakes for breakfast, Gary went off to work, and Rebecca, Arwen and I went off to Snoqualmie. The city of Snoqualmie has a couple of really nice points. The nicest point is, of course, Snoqualmie Falls (1, 2, 3, 4). Nothing can describe Snoqualmie Falls in all its glory except to say it's just plain beautiful. And powerful, too. Go see it if you're ever close to Seattle -- it's well worth the drive. After seeing and enjoying Snoqualmie Falls, we walked toward the visitor center, where we saw rhododendrons growing (1, 2, 3). In case you're curious, rhodies happen to be the state flower of Washington.. Continuing on down the road, we came to the old train station of Snoqualmie. We didn't get to go inside because it was closed during the week, but we did get to walk around outsite for quite a bit. We saw a very large log (1, 2), a lovely rock fountain (1, 2) and a large wheel which we guessed was for operating very large bandsaws (1). We continued on our way, and went to one of the local stripmalls. We went to several shops, where I bought two pair of jeans (lesson learned: when buying jeans in a different brand than usual, TRY THEM ON BEFORE YOU BUY THEM!), a ball cap and a large chocolate peanut butter cup. Arwen didn't end up buying anything to wear, but she did buy a very rich truffle, which she rather enjoyed. Our day continued by heading back to Rebecca and Gary's, where we met up with the members of Breaking Free for some rehearsal before heading off to an open mic night at a local coffee shop. Much fun was had -- a high schooler stood up and read three of his poems, then I stood and played two of my favorite praise/worship songs, then Breaking Free stood up and did two songs... Then a couple of guys got up and sang a really funny song, then another really great song, then another and another and another and another... They. just. kept. playing. and. they. wouldn't. stop. They were great players, but the music all started sounding alike after the 7th or 8th song. We finally left because it was late, and we were all tired. We got home, said goodbye to the other two members of Breaking Free and went in to bed.

    (05/12)
We got up early (around 6:30), ate breakfast and drove to Mt. St. Helens. We got out to the mountain by around 11:00, then drove all the way out to the visitor center at the Johnston's Ridge Observatory. On the way, we saw a few very cool things: Steam from the crater (1, 2, 3, 4), the mountain wreathed in clouds (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), and the coolest of the cool: a poot (1, 2, 3)!! That's right; the mountain pooted!

When we stopped at the Johnston Ridge Observatory, we saw some cool informational signs (1, 2, 3 - check the distance to the mountain from the observatory.... it's a HUGE mountain when you consider the distances and how big it looks from there...), a very large stump (1), blown-down trees (1, 2, 3 - the blown-down trees are on the far ridge -- they looked like toothpicks from the observatory. The nearer ridge is completely bare from where it was scorched by 600F-1500F winds.), hummocks (1 -- the lumps in the valley), a before and after sculpture (1)and a cool waterfall in the very far distance (1). It was far enough away that you can barely see it in the fully zoomed picture, but we could hear it clearly enough to know it was a waterfall and not traffic. We headed back down the mountain, stopping at the last observatory before leaving the park entirely. There we saw statues of a berrypicker (1), hiker and ranger (1), miner (1) and a trapper (1). We saw two other things on our way out of the observatory: first was a bald eagle in flight (1) and second was this sign (1). In that sign, can you pick out the item that doesn't belong? We all got a good kick out of that sign. :-) We then loaded up the vanagon and headed toward home. We stopped at a very nice Mexican restaurant on the way home and enjoyed good food. We finally got home around 8:30 that evening. We(1) spent(2) some(3) time(4) with(5) the(6) dogs(7), making(8) sure(9) they(10) felt(11) loved(12), then(13) went(14) to(15) bed(16).

    WA HERE WE COME!
So Eowyn and I are leaving tomorrow afternoon for the house of friends of ours, where we plan to spend the night. Then we're going to drive to the airport really, really early on Tuesday and board a plane bound for Seattle, Washington. My sister and her husband live out there, as does Eowyn's aunt and uncle. We're going to leave on Tuesday and return on Sunday.. We're going to stay with my sister through Friday, when she will hopefully take us into Seattle-proper to meet up with Eowyn's aunt.

And now I'm off to bed. See you lovely people again next Monday, unless I perchance to post again between now and tomorrow when I pick Eowyn up from work.

    Fun dinner this evening
Eowyn and I had dinner this evening with a friend from The Cauldron. HaveThatLove and her husband, to be exact. It was nice. We met at Carraba's at about 6:00, and at a meal with them. There was much discussion about life, the universe and everything, of course, as there always is when new friends meet.

Many stories were told, and much laughter ensued. Oh, and there was much pettaige of the cute little puppy they brought with them on their trip. :-D Then we all headed our seperate ways, better for having met each other.

Eowyn and I then returned to Eowyn's apartment and watched two episodes of Firefly. ...I'm really getting attached to this show, and am looking much forward to "Serenity," which comes out later this year.

    SMS Sucks
SMS (That's Microsoft Systems Management Server and NOT Simple Messenging Service which most people have on their cell phones...) REALLY, REALLY, REALLY SUCKS. I have spent the last three weeks trying to get it working on a test domain at the office. There has been much reading of manuals and reading of message forums; there has been much asking of the great UFicle; there has been much cursing and gnashing of teeth...

The problem? Okay, the problem: When installed in a standard AD domain with a standard AD schema, I can see all the computers on the network, I can install the SMS package on the remote machines and I can see the properties of the computer remotely. However, SMS doesn't recognise the fact that the SMS package has been installed, nor can I remotely control workstations. When I install SMS in a standard AD domain and allow the installation to extend the AD schema, I cannot see computers on the network. I have to have something to show my boss before I leave for a trip to the Seattle area a week from today (it's after midnight, right? Yes, it's 05/03/05 as of 26 minutes ago...), and at this point, I don't know if I can do it. Anyone out there know SMS? Anyone out there who knows SMS wanna give me a hand with it? Any support you can give would be useful...

On a happier note: earlier this evening, Eowyn and I bought the box set of Firefly, a Joss Whedon (think Buffy and Angel)-directed show about the crew of a small ship trying to survive in extremely unfriendly territories. It's a good story, and I can't say anything more about it without giving away the entire plot. As it's Joss Whedon, you know it's gotta be good. Go watch it. :-D

And now I'm off to bed. It's late, I'm tired, I'm annoyed at Microsoft in general and SMS in particular, and I'm ready to get some sleep.

Y'all say a prayer for your country's soldiers -- pray that they come home safe and soon.

    Wow.
I never thought I'd get into this whole LJ thing... I'd heard people talk about it previously and thought to myself, 'what a stupid waste of time.' And I'd heard the jokes, too... One of the best ones I've heard is in an effort to save bandwidth, LJ was going to get rid of all the mood icons except for 'angsty.' :-)

On a positive note, though, it'll be nice to look back in a few months and see what I was up to. And maybe one of these days I'll trust this forum enough to place my really inspiring/intelligent/thoughtful stuff on here, too. Yes, as a matter of fact, I *am* capable of being inspiring, intelligent and thoughtful -- just ask Eowyn. :-D
